New in , Teaching Heart Auscultation to Health Professionals includes 7 adult heart sounds to help diagnosis of murmurs & congenital heart disease. Murmurs and abnormal heart sounds may be detected on physical examination. Although systolic murmurs are often "innocent" or physiological, diastolic murmurs are virtually always pathologic. A thorough history and physical examination almost always identifies which patients require further investigation and management.

A schematic scheme of the heart sounds and heart murmurs are shown in Figure 5. Systolic murmurs are very common and do not always imply cardiac disease. Most murmurs fall in the 1–3 audible intensity range, however murmurs in the 4–6 range are almost always due to pathologic conditions. Early Systolic Murmurs begin with the 1st heart sound and do not extend to the 2nd. Mid Systolic Murmurs are separate from the 1st and 2nd sounds and are usually, but not always, associated with ejection through an outflow tract. Holosystolic Murmurs by definition start with the 1st sound and extend to or through the 2nd sound.

    • 1st & 2nd Heart Sounds • 2nd & 3rd Heart Sounds • Clicks and Snaps • Murmurs • Rubs • Demonstrations: Historical: Pathophysiology: Associated Evaluations • Patient HX • Physical Exam • Laboratory & Imaging: Differential Dx: Evidence Base • Accuracy in Diagnosis of Systolic Murmurs • Accuracy in Diagnosis of Diastolic Murmurs. The core of the book is an extensive discussion of the art and science of diagramming and grading heart sounds and murmurs, ranging from S1 through S4 to ejection, systolic regurgitant, diastolic, and abdominal murmurs.
